Sastralian Premier League to boost school cricket in Matugama

The inaugural Sastralian Premier League (SPL) is planned as a 10-over cricket tournament for Ananda Sastralaya National School in Matugama. The Island Sports reports that the Old Sastralians Cricket Association is organising it with the school; ThePapare describes the organisers as the school’s management and alumni. The stated aims include supporting the school’s cricket development and bringing past and present cricketers together.

Eight teams are divided into two groups. JSD Challengers, Jagath Express, Liveka Power Lions and Rexhill Warriors are in Group A; JPI Royals, Five Star Heroes, Marine Titans and Finnk Falcons are in Group B. The schedule calls for 16 matches on November 7, 8 and 15, with November 16 available as a reserve day. The reports identify the competition as the 2026 edition.

Each franchise is to select a 16-player squad, not including its captain. Teams can take up to six guest players from other schools in the Matugama area, with four required in the playing XI. Each squad must also include two current Ananda Sastralaya players, and at least one must play in the XI. The rules allow five players over 20 and three over 40, and include an Impact Player option.

ThePapare reports that the player auction is scheduled for October 18, from 4pm, at Himakara Hotel in Yatadola. The reports say the tournament is intended both to provide opportunities for emerging cricketers and to generate financial support for the school’s cricket programme.
