Sri Lanka defeated England by two wickets in the third match of the Pakistan tri-nation ODI series at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 22, according to Sri Lanka Mirror and ThePapare. Newsfirst reports that Sri Lanka reached the target of 430 with one ball remaining. ThePapare and Newswire report that it was the second-highest successful chase in men’s ODI history.

England made 429 for four in 50 overs, Newsfirst reports. ThePapare says captain Harry Brook struck an ODI double century, the first by an Englishman, and that it was the fastest such innings in the format. Sri Lanka were 24 for two early in their reply and kept pursuing the target as wickets fell, according to Daily Mirror Sport and ThePapare.

Daily Mirror Sport reports that Pavan Rathnayake scored 130 and Janith Liyanage secured the win with a six in the final over. ThePapare says Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka also made substantial contributions but fell short of centuries. It reports that Fernando returned to the side after a strong run of domestic scoring, while Shanaka was recalled to the ODI team after an absence of more than two years.

ThePapare reports that the win gave Sri Lanka their first points in the competition after they lost to Pakistan in the opening match, and placed them second in the table. Newswire says the ICC rankings, updated on October 23, showed Sri Lanka moving from seventh to sixth, with 3,896 points from 41 matches and a rating of 95. England dropped to eighth with a rating of 93, behind Afghanistan on 94. India led on 115, followed by New Zealand on 109, South Africa on 104, Pakistan on 103 and Australia on 102.
