Severe lightning warning issued for 22 districts across Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has issued a severe-lightning advisory. Daily Mirror, Ada Derana and Newswire describe the warning as applying to all provinces. Rupavahini News reports that the advisory, issued at 11 a.m. on October 15, is valid until 1 a.m. on October 16.

Rupavahini identifies North Central, Eastern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, as well as Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Gampaha, Colombo and Kurunegala districts. It says thunderstorms with severe lightning are more likely in places during the evening or night, and temporary strong winds may occur during storms.

Separately, Newswire reports that showers or thundershowers are expected across most of Sri Lanka after 1 p.m. on October 15. It says rainfall exceeding 75 mm is possible in parts of Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Central provinces, and in Trincomalee and Kurunegala districts. Morning showers are possible along parts of the Western Province coast and in Galle and Matara; mist is expected in parts of Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces early in the morning.

The department has urged the public to take precautions against lightning, temporary strong winds and related hazards during thunderstorms. The reports do not give further information about expected impacts or any subsequent update.
