Newswire, Daily Mirror, Lanka Business Online, Sri Lanka Mirror and Newsfirst report that USS Canberra (LCS 30), a U.S. Navy littoral combat ship, reached Colombo Port on October 26. Lanka Business Online and Sri Lanka Mirror describe the stop as a routine naval visit, while Ada Derana’s Tamil-language report also says the ship arrived that day.

Newswire, Daily Mirror, Lanka Business Online, Sri Lanka Mirror and Newsfirst report this was the vessel’s second visit to Sri Lanka this year, following a Colombo call in June. Lanka Business Online says the U.S. Embassy expressed appreciation for the welcome and acknowledged the Sri Lanka Navy’s assistance with the ship visits.

Lanka Business Online reports that U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Meyer described the calls as part of longstanding ties between the two navies and connected them with a shared aim of maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and stability in the Indian Ocean. Ada Derana reports that USS Canberra left Colombo after a two-day visit.

Separately, Daily Mirror reports that the United States provided US$17 million in grant funding for Colombo Port modernization. Newsfirst says the port is preparing for a modernization programme intended to improve its efficiency, technology and competitiveness, but the supplied report provides no further details.
