Expert committee submits report on public proposals for election law reforms

An expert committee appointed to examine public submissions on election law reforms has delivered its report to the Parliamentary Select Committee reviewing election-related laws. The review excludes legislation governing Provincial Council elections.

According to Newswire, the expert committee assessed 31 proposals from members of the public, institutions and organizations, as well as reports from earlier parliamentary select committees that had examined election matters. It prepared separate reports on issues and themes raised by organizations and institutions.

The report was handed to Select Committee chair Prof. Chandana Abayarathna, who is also Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government. He said registered political parties had also provided views and proposals.

The Select Committee intends to consider submissions from the public, institutions, organizations and political parties, then submit an interim report to Parliament within two months. The minister said the public will have another opportunity to propose amendments or new measures after that interim report is delivered.

The committee has also extended by two weeks the period for registered political parties to submit their views and proposals.
