Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 37 runs in the opening match of the ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi on October 18. Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and chose to bowl. Pakistan made 305 before being dismissed in 49.5 overs, with Salman Agha scoring a century.

Sri Lanka’s chase fell short after a late collapse, according to the Daily Mirror. The Island Sports report described a brief counterattack from Dasun Shanaka, who was playing ODI cricket again and scored 28 from 18 balls before losing his wicket while trying to hit Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi. The report said Sri Lanka were already into their tail at that point.

The ICC later sanctioned both sides for slow over-rates in the match. It said Sri Lanka had bowled one over short and Pakistan two overs short after time allowances. Sri Lanka were fined 5% of their players’ match fees and Pakistan 10%, under the penalty rate of 5% per over short. Match referee Jeff Crowe imposed the fines; both captains, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Kusal Mendis, accepted the penalties after pleading guilty, so formal hearings were not required.

The tri-series features Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England. The reports do not provide details of the teams’ next fixtures.
